October Tip of the Month: Ankle Sprains

The most common sports injury is an inversion type ankle sprain. A sprain is the stretching or tearing of a ligament. Ligaments help hold bones together providing static and dynamic support to the joint. Sprains are classified into three grades with grade one being the least severe and grade three being the most severe.

The initial treatment for ankle sprains is to use the RICE Principle. Rset the injured ankle by being non weight bearing or partial weight bearing until you can walk without a limp. Ice the ankle for 15 to 20 minutes 3 to 4 times a day to control swelling and pain.

Use an ace wrap to provide gentle Compression for swelling control. Elevate the injured leg to also help control swelling.

An x-ray is usually a good idea to make sure that there isn’t a fracture.
