Chondromalacia Patella or CMP is related to a softening of the articular cartilage which covers the undersurface of the kneecap. The kneecap is subjected to forces ranging from 2-3 times bodyweight when climbing stairs to 8 times bodyweight when rising from a squat position. The most common complaints pain, aching, and grinding or popping under or around the kneecap.
Initial treatment usually consists of icing the knee for 15 to 20 minutes a couple of times a day along with an appropriate strength and flexibility program. Stretching the hamstrings along with strengthening of the gluteals and quadriceps are important for a good outcome. Many times limiting the amount of knee bend from about 40 degrees to 0 degrees during strengthening exercises can help reduce the pain while you gain strength.
