Knee replacement is suggested for patients with severe damage of the knee joint,  by either progressive arthritis, trauma, or other diseases of the joint, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Osteoarthritis, and nonsurgical treatments like medications, physical therapy, and activity changes are no longer helpful for relieving pain.

Knee replacement may be an option for patients who avoid contact sports, and activities that put excessive strain on the knee joint such as running, contact sports, and heavy or repetitive lifting.
