September Tip of the Month:
Proper Hydration

As we continue to participate in outdoor activities, it is important that we get the proper hydration we need to make sure our body has the right amount of fuel.

Outdoor activity is a great way to stay active and fit.  Even though summer is winding down, we are still dealing with exercising in the hot and humid weather and we need to make sure we listen to our bodies and pay close attention to hydration.  When it is warm outside our bodies sweat as a way of helping us cool down and in some cases, you may not even realize that you are losing fluids.

Keep your muscles working and avoid fatigue by drinking before, during, and after activity-you do not want to rely on thirst alone as the only reminder that you need to hydrate.

  • A good guideline to follow is to drink at least 2 cups of fluid at two hours before your activity
  • During the activity, you should drink 4-6 ounces of fluids every 15 to 20 minutes
  • When you are done with your activity make sure you replenish your fluids
    • If you want to be precise on how much you should drink: weigh yourself before and afteryour activity
      • You should drink 20 ounces of water for every one pound of water weight lost
