In October of 2011 the National Federation of State High School Associations warned that caffeinated    energy drinks should not be consumed before, during or after physical activity because they can raise the risk of dehydration and increase the chance of potentially fatal heat illnesses.

In the USA cola-type drinks are limited by the FDA to 71 mg caffeine per 12 ounce serving. In addition to the caffeine most energy drinks also contain herbal supplements that effectively increase the effect of caffeine.

Most adverse reactions occur when a person consumes over 200mg of caffeine in a relatively short period of time and can include insomnia, nervousness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, seizures, cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac arrest.

Athletes are advised to eat a well balanced diet and maintain proper hydration for performance and recovery.
